Aim
The main aim of our project was to investigate the pollution in Veli Losinj, using all three sciences: biology, physics and chemistry. A more specific aim in the biology group was to investigate the population of algae in different locations and compare the results.
Locations
Basically all the students from each class group were divided into 4 or 5 groups and they investigated the five locations. Here is a snapshot from Google maps of the locations one to five.
The first location was situated in a harbor. The second location was a channel to the open sea, very close to the harbor. The third and forth locations were open to strong sea currents, but the fourth location also had a graveyard above it. The last, location 5, was the furthest one of all, and it was also located in a harbor. We used algae as our indicators to the purity of the sea.
Different Algae as indicators
Green Algae
• Green algae are primarily known to signify polluted water, and because of pollution by nitrates and phosphates, these algae will increase their population rapidly.
Red Algae
• Red algae are present in both polluted and non polluted areas. They are considered to be a category of species that in some locations show pollution and in some other locations show clean water.
Brown Algae
• Brown algae can be very large in size and are primarily signs of non polluted areas at the seashore..
Variables
Independent – each of the five locations that are being investigated
Dependent – the population of different sorts algae.
Controlled - lack of swimmers on the location, the same day, same method of measurement and data collection applied in all biology groups.
Hypothesis
I predicted that locations 1 and 5 will have the most green algae and the least brown algae, since they are located in harbors and there are a lot of boats passing and in addition all the waste from the hotels and restaurant...
