‘He disliked all women’ Explore the depiction of two female characters in 1984.

The first character I am going to explore is the character of Mrs Parsons. She is one of Winston’s neighbours at Victory Mansions and the wife of Mr Parsons, who works in the same ministry as Winston. And who regards Winston as a friend. We first meet her in the second chapter   of the book and she is the first women who is explain in detail ,as the only other women mentioned is Julia but as of yet he doesn’t know her name.

She comes to Winston’s flat to ask his help in fixing her kitchen sink as it is blocked and her husband isn’t at home.   She has two children a nine year old boy and his younger seven year old sister.   She is Thirty years old, but is described as much older. A colourless, crushed-looking woman, with wispy hair and a lined face.

The reasons for her early aging become quickly apparent when we meet her children. They are vile creatures, who will not listen to their mother and have no respect for her. Because they know they could turn her into the thought police at any moment. Mrs Parsons also knows this fact and that her life is just a countdown. But the saddest thing of all is that this scenario is now common . And I feel Orwell added Mrs Parsons into the novel to show what a modern family is like. And how different it is. By going into her home you can see the helplessness of the role of the parent in 1984. How the party is destroying the family unit and there is no love from the children to their parents anymore.

But although the children have no respect or love for her, and their behaviour towards Winston is appalling ‘You’re a traitor!’ yelled the boy. ‘You’re a thought-criminal! You’re an Eurasian Spy! I’ll shoot you, I’ll vaporise you, I’ll send you to the salt mines!’
