Purpose: The purpose is to inform students on Hindu wedding traditions.
I. Introduction
A. “We have taken the seven steps. You have become mine forever. Yes, we have become partners. I have become yours. Hereafter, I cannot live without you. Do not live without me. Let us share the joys. As the heavens are stable, as the earth is stable, so may our union be permanently settled.â€
B. These are traditional Hindu wedding vows.
C. Hindu weddings are famous for being extravagant, pricey and over the top.
D. A Hindu wedding often consists of five festive wedding celebrations
II. Main
A. The first celebration is the engagement party.
1. The engagement party is the family’s way of publicly announcing the intent to marry.
2. This is cause for much celebration, and usually consists of dancing and singing into the early morning hours.
3. It is customary for the bride to change her dress about five times throughout the evening.
B. The second party takes place on the day the bride and groom sign their marriage contract at the courthouse.
1. Again, family and friends are invited and there is much celebration.
2. The bride only wears 2 dresses at this event.
C. The next event is the Henna party.
1. The henna party takes place on the day before the wedding, and usually lasts all night.
2. Henna is a dye that is used to make special tattoos on the hands and feet of the bride.
3. This is done to ward off evil spirits and ensure happiness of the new couple.
4. It is traditional for the bride to wear a green dress to the henna party.
D. Then there is the actual wedding ceremony and reception.
1. On average, the Hindu couple will host around 300 guests at this party.
2. For the wedding itself, the bride and groom exchange rings and vows.
