Hispanic American Diversity Assignment

Hispanic groups of all walks of life such as Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban
Americans, Central and South Americans share a same common interest in gaining land and a
better way of life their families. Their language tie is Spanish speaking, and they believe whole
heartedly in their religion of the Roman Catholics and Protestant faith.   The United States Census
Bureau have reported high percentages in poverty and the differences of these groups acquiring
the English language separately.  
The Pew Hispanic Center provides information on of each of these group’s (Hispanic)
unemployment rate in the United States.   The Cuban Americans and Puerto Ricans share a
common political background of citizenship in the United States.

Language
Spanish is a shared heritage among Hispanics living in the US and according to the
United States Census Bureau (2002), there is various differences of groups acquiring the English
language here in the US.   23%, of Mexican Americans are reported to speak English is while
Puerto Ricans are more English oriented with a 39% of them speaking English (Schaefer, 2006).  

Southern and Central Hispanics groups such as Salvadorans and Dominicans; as of late
immigrant to the United States speaks more in their native tongue instead of English, but on the
other hand Cuban Americans have established a slightly higher knowledge of English with 40%
of them speaking English ( reported by the Pew Hispanic Center, 2004).





Having bilingualism in schools plays an important factor to convincing Hispanics
immigrants to learn the English language.   Barbara Miner (1999), California approved a
proposition 227, which is slowly bring an end to bilingual programs in schools and the making
the schools of “English only” programs.  
The worst part of having an “English only” speaking school like the ones in California for
example is that 80% of the population of students are Latino.   Miner further...
