Events that happened after World War II were probably the most monumental events that took place in American and in World History. The impact that World War II brought was a foundation for the United States as to how they, as a country, was going to lead the world in everyway possible. U.S. Presidents had to become world leader and powerful leaders that brought peace and prosperity to America. Leaders also had to come from those who may not have been President of the United States and help lead the charge of social injustice. These example that influenced history would transcend and serve as a model to the world.
1950’s: “I like Ikeâ€
In the 1950’s the most significant political event that greatly influenced the 1950’s was the election of President Dwight Eisenhower. During the 1952 election, Republicans exploited the stalemate in Korea, the fall of China, and the fear of domestic communism to suggest that the Democrats could not protect the nation’s security. President Dwight Eisenhower projected an aura of paternal calm. Pursuing “modern Republicanism,†the new president sought consensus, not confrontation. The election outcome was never much in doubt. Ike’s broad smile and confident manner won him over 55 percent of the vote. “The great problem of America today,†he had said during the campaign, “is to take that straight road down the middle.†Eisenhower declared that he was “conservative when it comes to money and liberal when it comes to human beings.†(Davidson, 2009). With this philosophy, he provided for many of the economic and social changes ever before seen in American History. One of his objectives, other than Korea, was to take on and do away with the fear of Senator McCarthy had done is spreading fear and accusing people of being communists.
