There are 754,147 people in America that are living in homeless shelters right now. Out of those 754,147, there’s 338,781 living on the streets, in their cars, and other places not meant for human habitation. Why? They are living in those conditions because they refuse to live in homeless shelters. There are 338,781 people sleeping on benches at parks in the cold. Why? They sleep on benches because the opted to make the wrong decision. There are so many people without a home to live in or without a bed to sleep in at night. Why? They refuse to accept help from a helping hand. All these reasons are why I say that homeless people are homeless because of their own wrong doing.
People that are living on the streets were not always homeless. Like Bob for instance, he used to live in my old neighborhood, he smelled real bad. No one wanted to be near him, but what nobody knows is that Bob was once a successful lawyer. He had a wife and children, until he decided that drugs and alcohol were more important than his family. Karen Riggins, 41, a former sergeant in the U.S. Army lived in her car for years before getting help from Impact Services. Let me tell you a little about impact services since 1974, Impact Services Corporation has worked in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. Impact’s commitment to helping people find and obtain employment has endured and grown, typically serving over 1,800 persons annually. Today’s employment and training programs target veterans from across the city as well as residents in the heart of Kensington community where Impact headquarters.
There are so many people and facilities available and willing to lend a helping hand. Dave Antonini, an Outreach specialist for Horizon House goes out to the streets to try and get people young and old to homeless shelters.
