Imagine waking up in the morning and helping the children prepare for school. They get dressed and eat breakfast then the school bus comes and goes without the children. Instead they head to dining room table where they pull out their school books and prepare for school. For people who homeschool their children this is an everyday routine. So, what is home schooling? Why do people do it and what are the results that homeschooling has on the children. Homeschooling is an old concept that is often misunderstood in today’s society. Many people different types of people homeschool for many different reasons, but they do it with one goal in mind to provide the best education that they can for their children. In this paper we will look at what homeschooling is, why people do it, and some of the results that they have had with homeschooling. Before we can truly understand the concept of homeschooling let us first look at the definition of homeschooling, take a brief look at its history and where it is today.
When people hear the word homeschool, they often do not know what to think. Some think of the images they might have seen on television or in the movies. Others think of the things that they have heard from other people or on the radio. Therefore, before we can move forward it is very important that we first not only define what homeschool is but also get a brief history about the subject. If one is looking for a technically definition of homeschooling the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary describes the word homeschool as “to teach school subjects to one’s children at home†. For a more current definition, Wikipedia describes homeschooling as the education of children at home, typically by their parents and/or professional tutors rather than in a public or private school.
