Focusing on how one character Amir has converted his life from rags to riches, Can redemption be possible after the hardships he has faced? Amir is the only character to clearly display redemption, he goes through self redemption, acts selfless and honors the past. Amir had a childhood that was full of unpleasant events. As a boy Amir did many negative things towards his loyal friend Hassan, That Hassan never deserved. Over time as Amir grew older and wiser carried a guilt with him that he would hold for almost twenty years. Forgiving himself for his behavior as a child and coming to the realization by himself that as a boy he could not of done anything differently simply because he was not wise enough, is Amir going through self redemption and ridding himself do his past. “ I hadn’t been happy and I hadn’t felt better, not at all. But I did now...I felt healed.”(303) In this moment of physical agony Amir is realizing that things in his life have not been pleasant however, this was going to be a crossroads for him. He realized he could not continue to punish himself for mistreating Hassan when they were young boys. He could not hold himself responsible for Hassan begin sexually molested. Saving Sohrab from Assef and the Taliban’s torment displays Amir being selfless. Amir knew that Asses was a dangerous man when he went to retrieve Sohrab from the orphanage the later Assef’s home.
