How to write essay

* Apart from being familiar with the main periods in the development of British literature, canonical authors and their woks, students should be able to:

                                  o recognize the elements of form in a literary passage;
                                  o perceive meanings;
                                  o identify tone and mood;
                                  o follow patterns of imagery;
                                  o use specific literary terms.



Examples:

A. Comment o n the use of language, the content, and the main themes in the following passage from Wordsworth’s “Immortality Ode”, in order to establish the way(s) in which it is representative of its period (the Age of Romanticism).

B. Write a critical analysis of the poem “Song” by Christina Rossetti, paying attention to such features as structure, imagery and main ideas. Try to establish the way(s) in which the poem responds to earlier romantic and sentimental representations of love.  

C. Comment o n the following passage from Shakespeare’s play Henry V, paying special attention to the main ideas and the use of specific images to express them. How does this passage relate to Elizabethan conceptions of kingship?

THE ESSAY should fulfil the following basic requirements:

(i) PRESENTATION

            The essay should open with a brief and clear introduction. There is no need to tell the reader/examiner what a great text you’re writing about or what a wonderful writer produced that text.

            The body of your text should be organized in clear paragraphs with each paragraph focusing o n a particular aim.

            The concluding paragraph must draw together the ideas and arguments presented in the text and provide a closing commentary o n the set topic.
