Two years ago it was illegal to kill a wolf even if that wolf was killing your pets or livestock. Now Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming all have a wolf hunting season this fall. They would have had one last year but it was protested and was delayed by the Supreme Court. Wolves have gone from almost extinct to the predominate predator in the forest. Wolves need to be hunted.
Wolves are the top predator in North America. I think they are the smartest animal just because of the way they hunt their prey. Its almost like the way a football team plays faking them into one area while the real danger comes around from an unseen angle every player knows its job and does it fast and efficient with brute force. This alone is enough to make them top predator. Being the top predator in the forest naturally they compete with the top species us this causes a lot of damage. They kill livestock and pets. When we go hiking we pack guns for wolves and bear spray for the bears. We have seen more wolves and wolf sign then almost any other big game besides deer and elk.
Wolves have been known to scare grizzly bears off their own kill, an animal weighing close to a thousand pounds when a wolf is only around 150 pounds. Not only is that thought provoking to someone going into the woods but also it’s dangerous for young kids or families. It would be alright if wolves weren’t so abundant in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. But they are.
Wolves have killed and eaten a trained hunting dog in just over 15 minutes. People think that only happens in the deep woods but I happened just 30 miles outside of Lewiston Idaho. Wolves are much faster, stronger, and larger than a big dog. They need about 20 pounds of meat every two to three days. There is approximately 6 to 15 wolves in a pack each needing their own food. This leads wolfs to eat just about anything living. Wolves are destructive; there is no question behind that.
In fact Most of the wolf sign I come across is in the form of destruction....
