Image Of Nursing

Underpaid, overlooked, compassionate, giving, Ca ring, motherly, busy, overworked, grumpy, and burnout thse are all expression of nursed to describe the image society has on nursing. Throughout this paper the impact the image of nursing has on nursing practice today will be discussed.
Image is a term used to describe how we as in society view others. Nursing as as define by Florence Nightenngale, in her notes on caring, what it is and what it is not is having “charge of the personal health of somebody….and what nursing has to do… is to put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him”   (Nightingale). Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and population according to the 2003 edition of ANA’s Nursing’s Social Policy Statement.
The image of nursing has impacted nursing practice today in many different ways, such as the dress code, gender, television series, and being a professional all day every day. A professional nurse to me is a nurse who not only carries herself nicely at work but also outside of work as well, and is still in a state of mind of a nurse. Meaning when not at work and sees someone who is in need of care it is your responsibility to help because as a professional nurse your still entitled to care even if not getting paid, and is you’re to invade patients privacy by discussing patients conditions with others and not to see nursing as a job but a career.
