Impact Of Industrialization On Europe

Industrialization in Europe is one of the greatest outcomes of the nineteenth century.   Four areas of society that changed dramatically due to industrialization are changes in technology, urbanization, and working class life.   Industrialization changed European society both positively and negatively.   In this essay I will chronicle the three areas and list positive as well as negative effects of industrialization on the people of Europe.
Technology consisted of inventions that changed the way production occurred.   These inventions improved the way goods were produced.   Machines such as the cotton gin, water frame, power loom, and spinning jenny allowed textile products to be produced in mass quantities.   Without question the most well known cotton related invention was Eli Whitney’s cotton gin which removed seeds from raw cotton quickly.   There was great demand for cotton which couldn’t be produced at a high level until spinning machines were invented to keep up with the demand.
“In 1733, the Englishman John Kay patented the flying shuttle, which weavers operated by pulling a cord that drove the shuttle to either side, enabling them to “throw” yarn across the loom rather than draw it back and forth by hand.” (Textbook, p. 630)   The flying shuttle doubled the output of weavers.   James Hargreaves invented the spinning jenny, which could spin numerous spools of cotton at the same time.   Hargreaves invention out produced the flying shuttle.   In 1769 the water frame was invented; this machine could spin several hundred spools of cotton at a time by using water.   These easier and faster ways of spinning and weaving cotton led to the production of textiles increasing dramatically.
The discovery of coal was significant to the Industrialization of Europe.   It meant that homes could now be heated by coal which was cheaper than using wood.   Coal was important in making coke which was used to make iron.   The pottery industry saw an increase when it began using coal....
