1. Slidell Mission: Polk wanted John Slidell to persuade Mexico to sell California and New Mexico territories and settle a dispute concerning the Mexico-Texas border. He failed to complete either.
2. Oregon Treaty: Settled dispute of Oregon boundary, stemming from the Treaty of 1818 in which both United States and British settlers were granted free navigation of the territory.
3. Wilmot Proviso: Bill that banned slavery in the territories acquired after the War with Mexico
4. Walker Tariff: Bill that reversed the high rates of tariffs imposed by the Whig "Black Tariff" of 1842.
5. Seneca Falls: The site of the women's rights convention that met in 1848 at the Wesleyan Chapel. 300 men and women attended to vote in the Seneca Falls Declaration, which was signed by 32 men.
6. Free Soil Party: Formed in 1847, this party was dedicated to opposing slavery in newly acquired territories such as Oregon and ceded Mexican territory.
7. Wisconsin: one of the states in the Northwest Territory.
8. California Gold Rush: In 1849, gold discovered in California attracted a rush of people all over the country to San Francisco.
9. Elias Howe: United States inventor who built early sewing machines and won suits for patent infringement against other manufacturers.
10. Mexican War: Following disputes over Texas that were settled by Mexicans the United States declared war on Mexico in 1846 and by treaty in 1848 took Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and part of Colorado for $15,000,000.
