This essay will prove that the individual must be destroyed for a totalitarian state to succeed resulting in the annihilation of humanity. Totalitarian governments rely on a dictator with absolute power of every aspect of life in order for it to remain in power. The avowed goal of totalitarianism is to maintain power regardless of cost. A leader such as Big Brother in 1984, by George Orwell, would have complete control of the freedom, will and thought of its civilians. In such an environment, there is no room for an individual to exist. Three conditions must exist to ensure the status quo is maintained: living in fear; mental destruction and corrupted youth. The aforementioned must be implemented to prevent non compliance and rebellion. . By ensuring that the individual is nonexistent, the government has guaranteed its own longevity.
Just as Dracula strikes fear into the eyes of many, ‘Big Brother’ must follow suite and ensure that its denizens live in constant fear. According to Winston, main character, “You could not have pure love or pure lust nowadays. No emotion was pure because everything was mixed up with fear and hatred. “(Orwell 67). The removal of pure emotions allows the Party to assimilate the populous. The emanating aftermath deprives humanity of their ability to emotionally connect to one another. Anything that resembled anything pure and whole was crushed by the all powerful state. There’s no doubt about it, the Party must consume the pure emotion of their citizens otherwise the Party faces its own demise. Like a memorable song, the Party’s mantra of fear, mixed with hatred must overwhelm the helpless citizens to the point of complete submission. To ensure that The Party’s mantra becomes the memorable song, they must first destroy the ability for one to think for themselves.
