International Negotiation

The role of a negotiator is a crucial part of life.   It is important that there are people who are able to play the neutral party.   Some of our greatest achievements in history have come from compromises. In Leadership and the New Science, Margaret Wheatley says that the role of a facilitator is essential.   She writes that we need “…to understand the “and” of one and one.”(pg. 46)   She means that in a world full of protons, electrons, and neutrons; be the neutron that brings people together in a negotiation.   A great question in life is how we can get to a safe place so people can process things that are important.   If a person is so emotionally hijacked they will not retain anything, but their own emotions, how can we bring this person to a safe place so we can maximize negotiations.   Margaret Wheatley writes, “It is not the law of large numbers or critical mass that creates change, but the presence of a small disturbance that gets into the system and is then amplified through the networks.”(pg. 87)   Be the one that takes the role of bringing value added relationships together.   A lot of the major changes in life are not large groups of people getting together for a change.   It can happen by the simplest person from an organization.     So those who are able to disengage their biases and fears will succeed in negotiations.   So having said that what happens when there is something that happens which disrupts the natural order of a system.   In   Leadership and the New Science, Margaret Wheatley writes “…Chaos has always partnered with order…”(pg. 117) this is typically not the most common thought about chaos.   She means that with all this chaos going on there is actually a distinct pattern developing.   With chaos the world is in a closed system- no energy coming in and none going out.   The natural order of a closed system is disorder.   Be the facilitator that goes into a closed system who creates order.   This involves the facilitator to bring the closed system out to...
