Into The Wild

Into the Wild

The excerpt of “Into to the Wild” told by Jon Krakauer is basically his account of going
into the wild by himself. The excerpt talks about how Krakauer and two other men, Roman Dial,
Dan Solie, and Andrew Liske joined together to make the adventure into the Alaskan wilderness.
This story is about how these men made the expedition to where Christopher McCandless took
his journey just a year and a week before. McCandless ultimately died of starvation because he
ate a poisonous potato root. Yet if he would have been able to cross the Teklanika when he
wanted to he would have survived.
One thing that Krakauer shares with us is that if Chris had brought a topographic map
with him he would have known of a old gauging station. At this station were two towers with
one on each side of the river. The towers had a cart attached that could get you from side to side.
If Chris had known about this he may have been able to get out. The four men had made their
way through the overgrown trail that Chris once walked on. They eventually made it to the
Fairbanks bus 142. The four men are amazed at what they see. Everything was still the same as
when Chris starved to death in the bus. Everything was still in place; from his blue toothbrush all
the way to his stacked up dirty dishes. Many people thought negatively of what Chris
McCandless set out to do. Chris was not fully prepared to many peoples’ standards. If Chris did
not ultimately feel prepared I think he would not have went into the wild. McCandless distrusted
the value of things that came easily. He demanded much of himself-more, in the end, than he
could deliver (Krakauer 320). What was meant by this was that Chris wanted to be on his own
and really establish his own set of values. However he did know his own limit. This ultimately
was his downfall.
Chris McCandless was brave enough to forgo his college degree, his car and his well off
life style just to go live off...
