“Into the world†is a concept which deals with the experiences of growing up, maturation or transitions into new phases of life and a broader world. This notion is carried and presented in a variety of texts, and the different ideas and perspectives of each one allow the responder to broaden their own understanding of the elective. Transitions can be made through choice, unforseen circumstances or a natural progression in life. Experiences of this transition vary from person to person and are affected by different barriers and facillitators. Language devices help to shape our understanding of the concept in the prescribed text, ‘The Story Of Tom Brennan†by J.C Burke and the related material.
The Story of Tom Brennan written by J.C Burke explores this concept of into the world. The novel deals with a teenager named Tom, who’s journey is suddenly thrust into a new phase of life after the events stemming from a car crash. The car crash becomes the catalyst for change, and in an attempt to overcome the greif and suffereing dealt with as a consequence, the family move to Tom’s grandmother’s house in the new town of Coghill. His story explores the aspect of transitions made through unforseen circumstances, and througout it we are able to see the journey that he and his family take in their path to a new life. The first person narritive structure allows us to track Tom and his journey and gives us direct insight to his thoughts on the events unfolding before him. As he explain in the prolouge ‘In a couple of hours they would wake to find us gone, far away, so as not to remind them of their pain and what our family meant to this town’.
