Iraq: An Unjust War
The war in Iraq is clearly an unjustified act of war. Though it must be conceded that hindsight has made this more clear than it was to begin with (nobody knew at the time that they were looking at faulty intelligence), there was still no truly justifiable basis for entering into war that has cost the United States, both in terms of human life and in terms of finances.
The Bush Administration felt as if Saddam Hussein and his two sons were potential terrorists and that military action may need to be taken. The possibility of military action increased when Iraq refused to let the weapons inspectors test for weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). This directly led to a United States preparation for an invasion of Iraq. Once Bush’s deadline expired, despite fervent opposition from millions of people around the world and without the backing of the United Nations, American and British troops invaded Iraq on March 19, 2003 (Iraq, 16).
The invasion took place, and it seems quite clear now that the invasion and the entire war that has continued to this day was unjust to begin with. The war in Iraq is unjust because there were no WMDs found in Iraq. Saddam Hussein was a tyrant and his actions have caused fear and hate among the Iraqi citizens he ruled and people around the world. He ruled by oppression, committing atrocious acts such as testing chemical and biological weapons on the innocent civilians of his country. During his time in power, he blatantly violated nearly all the United Nation’s laws that pertained to his country, and mocked those who attempted to control his violent actions. Saddam Hussein may have been a vile man, but he did not do anything substantial to provoke an invasion or serve as a threat to the borders of any nation in the Middle East or to the security of the United States.
