iTunes is a free software application, introduced by Apple Computer on January 10,
2001 at MacWorld Expo in San Francisco, with the purpose of reproducing, organizing,
sharing and buying music, music videos, movies, games, audiobooks, etc. on internet
through iTunes Store.
This media player uses a system based in SoundJam MP, which is a very popular MP3
application created by the company Casady & Greene. Apple bought the SoundJam MP
copyrights and very soon after that came out the first release of iTunes which wasn’t
much different from SoundJam MP.
iTunes is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems, and it’s also the most
common used reproducer among iPod users.
Installation
Getting started with iTunes is very simple, it is available to download for free at
www.apple.com and then installing it is just a matter of following instructions. Once
installed you can start ripping CDs and browsing the iTunes Store for digital
downloads, and if you’ve got an iPod then you will see how good iTunes and iPod get
along.
Interface and Features
iTunes interface is very friendly and clean, even for beginners. The Mac interface is a
little more polished than its Windows version, so if you would like to have a 100%
iTunes experience you might want to try it out on an Apple computer.
The left-hand Source column is a directory for the app’s major areas like the music
library, the podcasts, videos, etc. The same column also allows access to the online
streaming radio stations, the iTunes Store and any playlist or smart playlist created by
the user according to some criteria.
iTunes makes it possible to organize the music into playlists, edit file information, burn
CDs, back up songs, encode music into different audio formats, to buy music through
iTunes Store and to activate a visualizer that presents music in a graphic way.
