Film review
The film Ivanhoe is a historical depiction of life in the medieval ages. The main plot is centred on a love triangle between the Lady Rowina, the Jew Rebecca and Ivanhoe. Throughout the film various topics are touched upon such as the treatment of Jewish people, the crusades, and the nobility in those times, King Richard, and various family problems within those times. Ivanhoe is a Christian who follows King Richard and is in love with the Lady Rowina. Trouble comes when King Richard’s brother wants to take the throne and gets his knights to help him. In his quest to support King Richard he gets injured where Isaac and Rebecca a Jewish family tend him and his wounds. Ivanhoe falls in love with Rebecca however has previous feelings for the Lady Rowina. Ivanhoe battles for his life along with a battle he has within himself due his love for 2 women.
One which was theme which is prevalent throughout the film “Ivanhoe†is the treatment of Jewish people which was portrayed very accurately. Both Isaac and Rebecca were clothed the way Jews would be during that certain time, as the time period suggested the Jewish people were not treated with great respect they were looked down at. Jews were seen as another race which was not as good as the Christian race. Throughout the film is was clearly stated that Isaac and Rebecca were a minority and had to be careful in what situations they go themselves in for they were aware of their boundaries. Another clear fact was that relationships between the Jews and Christians were not allowed. The film showed that very clearly for Ivanhoe knew him and Rebecca could never be together for their religions separated them. Moreover the treatment of Jewish people through this film was very accurately portrayed.
In the film there were many references to medicine and the use of it. Throughout the medieval time period medicine was influences by prayer, spells, mysticism and other things. Christians did not approve of this...
