Jesus and Mohammed have been confused as being one in the same by scholars. Both Jesus and Mohammed were born at completely different times; however, both had very similar purposes during their time here on Earth. Mohammed promoted Islam during the times when Judaism was strong, and Jesus promoted Christianity. Both Mohammed and Jesus were known for their methods of establishing and strengthening their religions. This paper will discuss the lives and history of both Mohammed and Jesus, the impact of their deaths, the ways they were worshipped, and how their messages are being carried out today.
Mohammed
Mohammed was born in approximately 570 CE and is considered to be last of the prophets. (Fisher, M.P., 2005) Mohammed’s father had passed away before he was born, and his uncle was the main care giver; therefore, making him a shepherd. Mohammed had traveled with his uncle to Syria and was observed by a Christian. The Christian was able to determine that Mohammed was a prophet, because of the markings on his body. Mohammed worked for a woman named Khadijah, transporting goods. At the age of 25, Mohammed married Khadijah. She understood his spiritual predisposition. (Fisher, M.P., 2005) His marriage was considered to be advantageous because Khadijah was not only a dedicated supporter but she had plenty of money. At the age of 40, Mohammed made a religious trip during what is now known as Ramadan. In the route of his trip, Mohammed was approached by the angel, Gabriel. Gabriel had asked Mohammed to narrate what is recognized as the first words of the Qur’an. (Fisher, M.P., 2005) This experience left Mohammed very uneasy; however, with Khadijas’ comfort she was able to encourage him to carry on his work. Mohammed shared this information with a few close friends of his. Mohammed was invited to speak to the public three years later.
