Jesus and Muhammad
There is a song that I sang as a child. It was called “Father Abrahamâ€, and it began by saying, “Father Abraham had many sonsâ€. Thus begins what I present to you. I give you two men whose lives produced two very popular religions. Interestingly, both of these religions originate from Abraham because both men were descendents of Abraham. I will tell you of their origins; their lives. I will expound on the impact that their death had on these religions, the way these men were and still are worshipped, and how the message that they brought to their followers is carried out to this day.
The Life of Jesus According to History
Most of what we know of Jesus comes to us from the scriptures in the Christian bible. Jesus is believed to have been born in Bethlehem, the home of the great King David. His mother was Mary, who conceived him as a virgin by the Holy Spirit. Her husband was a carpenter named Joseph. From his infancy through early childhood there is no record of any writings of his life. One story comes to us from when he was twelve years old. He had accompanied his parents to Jerusalem for Passover. When his parents discovered he was missing they found him at the temple astounding the rabbis with his understanding of the Torah. This story was presented to establish his connection to God and his role as God’s son. After this instance nothing is stated again about his life until the age of 30, at which point he was baptized. After his baptism he collected a group of twelve disciples. These twelve believed him to be the Messiah and at his command, they gave up all their possessions to follow him. Jesus taught them to give up worldly possessions in order to attain heavenly treasure. He also taught them that God was to be thought of as a loving father. He was known throughout the area for his teachings and miracles. He healed the sick and even raised the dead.
