European automakers haven’t exactly been shy about expressing their aversion toward hybrid vehicles, but Volkswagen announced today that it will launch its first plug-in hybrid by 2014.

Although specific details were kept to a minimum, Volkswagen chairman Dr. Martin Winterkorn made the announcement earlier today at the 32nd International Vienna Motor Symposium. Winterkorn says the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from VW should be on the road in 2013 or 2014.

“The electric car will impact the future of individual mobility in crucial ways – and Volkswagen is spearheading this technology,” Winterkorn said. “Over the mid-term, the plug-in hybrid offers great potential, because it combines the best of two worlds in one vehicle.”

Winterkorn failed to reveal which VW models were in line for the plug-in hybrid treatment, but it is believed the German automaker is working on plug-in versions of its Jetta, Passat and Golf models.
