John Q
Even though we as parents are required to have and do whatever is necessary for the well-being of our children, regardless if a person has or doesn't have sufficient insurance, if a life can be saved it should be saved because a hospital shouldn't be allowed to throw a patient out if they don't have the required insurance and a person shouldn't have to go to the extreme to get society to hear them out.
The movie John Q is a film that I watched over the weekend and it featured a father (Denzel Washington) and his wife ( Kimberly Elise) that worked very hard each and everyday. He had a son who was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. That while his son was admitted into the hospital, the father's hours at work were cut and his insurance was changed from PPO to HMO and the new policy didn't cover the surgery that his son needed. So, he and his wife were left with trying to raise 30 percent
($75,000) of $250,000 to just get their son's name on the list of recipients of an available heart. Unable to raise the money in a timely manner their son was being threatened by the hospital administrators to be released. Which is when the father chooses to take matters in his own hands by taking a hospital full of patients and employees hostage.
Regardless if a person has or doesn't have sufficient insurance if a life can be saved it should be saved. Which is why John Q went into the tirade that he did. He felt that he was a hard working husband and father and he didn't deserve what he or his family was going through, and he felt that it wasn't his fault that his hours were cut and his insurance was changed from PPO to HMO. He also was angered at the fact that his son was being kicked out of the hospital on top of not being put on the recipient's list for a heart. So he felt that the system as well as society had let him and his family down.
A person shouldn't have to go to the extreme to hear you out. Which is what John Q felt he had...
