Story Of Jonah Notes for Religion Project
  * 5th Century B.C.
  * Postexilic Era
  * Son of Amittai
  * Was told by God to set off for the city of Nineveh
  * Fleed to the city of Tarshish instead
  * Went to Joppa, paid a fare to go on a boat to Tarshish
  * God made the sea very violent and turbulent
  * The men of the ship threw Jonah overboard after Jonah said they could.
  * God send a large fish that swallowed Jonah
  * He remained there for 3 days and 3 nights
  * Said a Psalm of Thanksgiving to God, and the whale spit him up
  * God called to Jonah a second time to go to Nineveh
  * It took Jonah 3 days to walk through the city proclaiming that the city will be destroyed in 40 days
  * The king of Nineveh proclaimed that every person and animal should not eat or drink until they covered themselves with sackcloth and repented to God
  * God didn’t destroy the city when he saw that they had turned away from evil
  * Jonah was mad that God didn’t destroy the city, he then asked God to take his life
  * Jonah left the city and made a hut under the shade to watch and see what would happen to Nineveh
  * God built a gourd plant over Jonah’s head to relieve him of any discomfort
  * Jonah was very happy now
  * The next day, God send a worm that attacked and killed the gourd plant
  * God then sent a burning east wind over Jonah when the sun arose
  * Jonah called to God for death saying, “I’d be better off dead than alive.”
  * Jonah was now mad again because God killed the plant
  * God told him he should be concerned over the many people in Nineveh and take care of them as he did for Jonah

Summing It Up
God told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh and spread the word of the city being destroyed. Jonah went to Joppa to board a boat, then, tried to flee to the city of Tarshish.
