The Joys of Motherhood Vs. So Long a Letter
      Women in African Society have been portrayed in their novels as a sense of property. This also occurs in reality, there are authors of novels that have used real scenarios to support their stories.   These novels would include “The Joys of Motherhood” written by Buchi Emecheta and “So Long a Letter” by Mariama BA.   These two women authors of African society show the life situations of being a woman in their society that could be a true experience.     The shocking tales are frustrating, joyous and happy with accomplishments and failures of everyday life as a woman in Africa.   There are struggles of tragedy around every corner they meet.

      Women in the African culture are most valued for their reproductive ability.   Men value this characteristic in their women, because he will not be able to carry on his name if there are no children bared.   Another major issue, men assume his wife will give him a son.   In their life style daughters leave their compound to live with a new husband and vice versa with sons bringing their new wives to their family’s compounds.   But, in these African novels the woman pushes their ways to the top with their own minds not at the hands of a man.
      In the writings of Mariama Ba she explains in her first couple sections the passing of her husband, Modou.   She is devastated and can’t go on with out him. For herself and her friend Aissatouse has married for love at their families’ disapproval.   Further on the narrator explains of Modou’s extreme debt of leaving his first wife to build his new wife a luxurious life. This is a family get together that is necessary to reveal all of her husband’s secrets to be exposed to the family.   These displays the men in their society can pack up and leave his first wife and move on.
