Jubilee 1934, The Rough Past

Although our group feels that Pilar should have restructured the meeting and taken more of a leadership role, we do feel that she handled the interruptions well with shifting the focus back on Miguel’s performance issues.   Each time Miguel cheerfully spoke of the campaign outcome and did not want to be bothered with the details, Pilar was quick to refocus the meeting.   We also feel that she wanted to be supportive and flexible with Miguel.   For example, she praised him continuously and tried to help him understand the intent behind her sharing the complaints.   In addition, she also created a positive vision towards the end of her second meeting with Miguel by stating she would help him to regain the relationship needed with Jezebel.   As an example, she suggested creating a report to monitor his progress.   We view these managerial efforts by Pilar as encouraging and effective for maintaining relationships.   Pilar sought input via e-mail from Vanessa Sampson, a longtime colleague and Art Associate.   Vanessa was able to provide Pilar with some observations of Miguel’s work.   This attempt at getting another perspective shows that Pilar was aware that there is more than one side of each story.   We feel that Pilar could have used this opportunity to speak with Vanessa about seriousness and professionalism.   This would have been helpful in building a more team-oriented environment.
In conclusion, we believe Pilar did not show effective team leadership or the problem-solving skills she needed as a leader to successfully manage her team.   We do feel that her positive attitude was a plus with regard to interfacing with her team to share news, but we do not feel she utilized all of her abilities or the tools available to her in order carry out a successful meeting and maintaining the commitment needed for integrity of the organization.
