Situation Description
Kudler Fine Foods seeks to be a premiere gourmet grocery store for those that seek the finest meats, baked goods, produce, cheeses, and wine.   The first store was opened in 1998 in La Jolla, California, and has expanded into the Del Mar and Encinitas areas with opportunities to open a store in Carlsbad.   Kudler’s revenues have grown steadily which creates new business opportunities and the need for change.
Issue and Opportunity Identification
Since the inception of Kudler Fine Foods the owner, Kathy Kudler, has been in charge of all operations.   She does the selecting and ordering of products, runs the cash register at times, and stocks the shelves.   Because Kudler is a high-end specialty store, they have a small staff with a high payroll, but Kathy still maintains the majority of the responsibilities and is beginning to realize the need for help.   The possibility of continued growth and new locations will necessitate a reorganization of responsibilities and the hiring of new personnel because Kathy cannot manage all stores at once.  
Problem Definition
In short, Kathy Kudler is severely overworked.   While her health is good at the present time, the store will fall apart if something major happens to Kathy.   Kudler lacks a “Plan B” for keeping the business going.   If Kudler plans to expand further, it will not be possible for one person to manage all operations, especially if catering services are part of the proposed expansion.  
This provides an opportunity to hire outside help to assist with operations.   Hiring someone to help with the purchasing and inventory tracking functions will free up time for Kathy to work with customers as she wishes.   It will also be necessary for Kathy to hire someone to help perform the proposed catering services.   Since payroll is already high and absorbs nearly a quarter of the store’s gross income, it may be necessary to hire part time help for the short term until new...
