November 3 - Today there were a lot of "firsts."   First off, you signed the word "milk" with your right hand.   We've been teaching you three sign words (mild, more, and all finished) and today was the first time you actually did one of the motions by yourself.   There is a chance yo were just waving goodbye, but I believe you were telling me that you were ready for some milk.   It was exciting!   Secondly, while you and I were watching the USC vs Oregon State football game, you were walking along the coffee table and you grabbed the right handle of your sippy cup and then you took a drink.   You used your right hand, and prior to today you had only taken a drink from your cup if we were holding it for you or if you used two hands.   Thirdly, you slipped in the kitchen and got your first fat lip.   You cried so loudly and I felt horrible because you slipped on your sweat pants which were too long.   Your lip swelled up right after the fall so I cut iced it and held you tight.   My poor baby :-(   Lastly, tonight was the first time I put you to sleep without breast feeding you first.   It was a sad night for me.   Instead of breast-feeding you before bed, I gave you a bottle and rocked you to sleep while you were drinking it.   You fell asleep peacefully.   While I know the come has come for us to cut the umbilical cord,   breast feeding you was one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had.   Kyle, I will miss the connection beyond words, but   I will always cherish the memories of nourishing you with my own body and holding you close to my heart.

When you were an infant and were nursing nine times a day, I would often read or watch TV while you breast fed. But after a few months I dropped the outside distractions and concentrated on the way you nursed.   At each feeding, I'd watch your little mouth and facial features, and I focused on absorbing the natural beauty and innocents of a mother nursing her baby.   I watched you so closely that I memorized your movements....
