Prison Populations

There were many articles to write about but there was this one that actually stood out for me to write about. Brian Gilmore had written this article and compared the increasing population pertaining to the drug population. Even with his article I had did some extra research behind his research and found that the prisons are mainly crowed due to the drug crimes and other minor jail sentences
In the Jails now there is over nearly 2.2 million prisoners located in the jails and prison facilities. Now that is a lot of inmates to keep up with, continue to feed, as well as provide for. In my opinion this is part of the reason are taxes are high because we have to help provide for on the slide. During the years 1990 through 2004 the number of inmates in jail for drug cases amount to 20 percent and for prisons it is was more than 50 percent. Due to the over crowdedness of the jails and prison some States have passed a law that would reduce the drug offenders, meaning if a person is caught with four ounces or less the authorities may decide to just issue a ticked instead of taking the person to jail. Even though this law was passed for some states it appears that only Austin, Texas that have actually taken part in this program.
I believe that the government needs to pay more attention and put more money into the education system on educating the youth generation, so they may not grow tempted later to associate themselves with this type of behavior. While the offender is incarcerated they should take some drug classes to help try and rehabilitate them for their release.
