Legislation restricting teens from using electonic devices while driving

1. Laws reduce citizens rights, will eventually used as a way to make revenue for states.
2. Increase harassment from police
3. Unnecessary, Accidents and fatalities are down even prior to the use electronic devices
4. People will find other sources of distractions, is legislation really necessary.


 Everyday you see it while you are driving,
o people on there cell phones, eating, doing their makeup, shaving, yelling at kids in the back seat.
o All of these things are distractions which cause people to get into accidents.
 Because of this recently states such as California and Washington have enacted laws restricting drivers under the age of 18 while operating a motor vehicle to use any electronic device.
o The question we have before us is are these laws necessary and will they actually reduce to amount of accidents teenagers are involved in.
 I am here to let you know not only will these laws be worse off for teens but the long term effects could be devastating to you.

 It’s understandable that while you are on the road you want to be as safe as possible.
 With the recent law passed in California many individuals have concerns about the focus on cell phones, such as
o Dash Nextel of Sprint/Nextel Company “The problem with the law is it fails to address the real public issue of inattentive driving and singles out just one potential distraction, the handheld wireless phone, It ignores many other more significant causes of inattentive driving, including drowsiness, smoking, and adjusting the radio/CD player…”
 So the question is why are teenagers being discriminated against,
 The target should be all drivers and why just cell phones why not all distractions.
 We know that’s absurd, that cops cant pull you over every time they think your not paying the proper amount of attention and they shouldn’t be able to do this,
 It would be harassment.
