Official: Louise Lucas, VA Senate
Biography:
L. Louise Lucas was born on January 22, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she still resides. She graduated from Norfolk State University with Bachelor's in Vocational-Industrial Education in 1971, and a Masters in Urban Affairs in 1982. Her first known job was as a ship-fitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which she held from 1967 until her graduation in 1971. She subsequently served as an Interim Executive and Executive Director of the Southeastern Tidewater Opportunity Project from 1985 to 1992. She was elected Virginia State Senator as a Democrat that year and has held the seat largely uncontested ever since. She is also chair of the Local Government Committee, and sits on the Courts of Justice, Education and Health, Finance, and Senate Rules Committees. After two years in as Congressional Liaison of the Sponsored Program at Old Dominion University (1992-94), she became Assistant Professor of the Department of Academic Affairs at Norfolk State University. Later becoming Special Assistant to the Vice President for University Advancement, she served at the university from 1994 to 1998. In 2001, she ran in the Special Congressional Special Election after Congressman Norman Sisisky, but was defeated by Randy Forbes.
Louise Lucas is currently President and CEO of the Lucas Professional Center. She is also a longtime Deaconess at New Mount Olivet Baptist Church, lifelong member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Golden Life Member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated.
Policies:
Mrs. Lucas consistently opposes Castle Doctrine laws (enacted January, February 2011).
