From this lecture, our class was so happy to hear many many jazz examples and know more about those pieces' style, form, texture, etc. Dr. Taylor told us that 99% of jazz (including harmony) is from African. Africans are very good musicians, they have to be very clever to use piano, clarinet, trumpets. Since they haven't used it before. For them, the problem of instruments is hard to be solved. Dr. Taylor also told us that when the technology is not good as present, he and his colleges always share and listen to records together, 3 minutes of music is on one side of the record and it's rare, so people treasure them like gold.
Dr. Taylor use the “West end blues†to show us the “call and respond†of Clarinet and vocal. He said, people call Louis Armstrong “popsâ€, since he's the dad of jazz. Jazz is from poor people, Louis became famous in this field is initially because he can play the double high C easily, he's always surprising. His band dress like gentlemen and he has white people in his band too! Louis Armstrong did many things that no one tried before him.
In the lecture, Dr. taylor told us the secret about jazz. He said jazz musicians are less interested is melody, more in harmony. Jazz is almost all about form!
Duke Ellington's “Cotton tail†- a master piece. It's based on “I got rhythmâ€.
Hampton Hawes Trio's “Tiptoe†is also rhythm changes from “I got rhythm†too.
