The Life Of Whales And Dolphins In Captivity
Imagine being forced to live in your room with nothing in it untill you die, and only being fed if you did what people told you to do. Honourable judges, teachers, parents and students of Dorothy Peacock. My name is Taylor Testini and I would like to tell you a little bit about the life of whales and dolphins in captivity.
It is a fact that marine mammals face many difficulties in the wild, but that does not mean keeping these creatures in a small tank is the right thing to do. Whales and dolphins have developed their sense of sound. Sadly, they have no chance of using it in the pools because their sonar is disturbed by the pool walls. The result is that they stop using it and become deaf. Also, they no longer need to hunt fish because in captivity they are fed dead frozen fish and nothing else. There is a catch though. They're mostly only fed the fish if they do what they are told to do properly by their owners.
Every seven years, half of all of the dolphins in captivity die from, capture shock, pneumonia, intestinal disease, uclers, chlorine poisoning and other stress-related illnesses. Marine mammals mostly die because of stress and shock, or of starvation because they refuse food during the adaption to the tank with only dead fish to feed on. Later on , there were more promblems, such as skin infections and infections of the inner organ. To stop this, they are injected with vitamins, antibiotics and hormones. Without these, they would probably die even faster as the stress of their surroundings quickly cripples their immune system. The animals also...
