Lord of the Rings is a unique book in many ways. There are the characters, the plot, and the themes. The characters are very unique in many ways. Here are the shortest descriptions of the main ones:
Frodo: A hobbit that is originally carefree and happy, but eventually turns into solitude loving tactician at the end. He is courageous, loyal, and strong willed.
Sam: A hobbit that is self-sacrificing and kind. He would give his life to save Frodo.
Gandalf: An excellent tactician, which is surpassed only by his wizardly skills and his desire to do things for the right.
Aragon: A ranger who turns out to be the rightful king of Gondor and is crowned after the current king commits suicide.
Boramir: An heir to the king of Gondor, he is corrupted by the ring and tries to take it only to fail and die at the hands of the orcs.
Legolas: An elf that loves nature (as all elves do) he is very skilled with a bow and knows much of many nature lands.
Gimli: The son of Gloin, who was with Bilbo when they killed Smaug, he is a dwarf with skill in the axe and knows much of Moria.
Pippin/Merry: Quite similar is many aspects; both are fun loving hobbits who served their part in major battles. They also were with the ents when they flooded Saruman’s tower.
Saurman: A corrupted wizard, he is stripped of his power and prestige when the ents flood his tower and he refuses to turn back to the good side.
Sauron: An uberlich of huge power, he has amassed a huge army of orcs and several ring wraths. He is eventually crippled when Gollum takes the ring and falls into mount doom.
Gollum: Originally a hobbit, he slayed a friend over the one ring and fell to its curse. He plagues Frodo and Sam for ages, trying to get back the ring. He dies when he cuts off Frodo’s finger and falls with the ring into Mount Doom.
