Among the most essential elements to human existence are oxygen, water, food, and shelter. Imagine being deprived of one of these vital elements. Needless to say, that scenario is one which we try to avoid every day, consciously or not. If we take a step back for a moment and think about the effects of such a disaster, we realize that the damage goes far beyond being hungry. The effects could cause malnutrition of the population, an increased crime rate, or even a severe economic segregation possibly resulting in war.
Initially, the problem would present as a malnourishment of our youth, as their bodies have less stored resources stored away than a grown person’s. Worldwide, malnourishment is currently the leading cause of death for children. A deficit of vitamin A or zinc alone cause over one million deaths per year. It has been proven that if a child is malnourished for the first two years of their lives, the effect is absolutely irreversible. The child will not develop properly both physically and mentally. Even in instances where the nutrition may be provided at the last minute, the emotional effects are devastating. They will not bond socially and have a higher tendency to horde food and other items. They will be unable to learn, as their brains have atrophied to the point of no return. The worst part about considering these chilling scenarios is that they are happening right now, even as this problem is being discussed.
As the lack of food grows, the crime rate will, at first, slowly rise. This rising rate will soon begin to expand exponantially even after dwindling food supplies have reached a bottom and leveled out. The reason behind his is that a human’s need to survive will surpass any moral or value which has been instilled beforehand. This is what our brains are designed to do in instances such as these.
