  1. What connections can you make to your own life and the world as a whole?

      -A connection that I’ve made to the world as a whole is that the grief of a loved one changes a person a whole.   When a loved one dies a person may develop addictions or develop behaviours they wouldn’t otherwise have as a way to cope with the pain they are feeling. In addition, a grieving person may come to realizations that they would not have come to if it were not for the death of their loved one. For example, the character of Abigail Salmon completely changes after the death of her daughter. She realizes that she wants to be more than just a full time mother, which leads to the abandonment of her remaining family. Abigail becomes so overwhelmed by grief that she no longer wants to relive her daughter’s death by attending memorials. Soon after, she abandons her family because she realises that not only are the memorials reminders of her daughter’s death but so is her remaining family. It is not uncommon for family members of the deceased, especially when the victim has been murdered, to begin rejecting remnants of the murder and their support system.

      -Another connection I made relates to when Lindsey was at the camp for gifted student and was told that she would have to plan the perfect murder instead of a perfect mouse trap. Lindsay is uncomfortable with the idea of planning a perfect murder considering the recent murder of her own sister. However, she pretends that having to plan a murder does not bother her. This part in the novel is important because it shows that the majority of the other children think nothing of having to commit a murder because the sorrow of Susie’s murder has passed because they had no real relationship with her.   However, for Lindsey the pain is not that easily forgotten because she was Susie’s sister and she had a personal relationship with her.
