Maestro, To kill a Mocking bird, Felon Heroes Comparison

The role of the outsider may be chosen or imposed on an individual. If chosen it frequently reflects an extreme reaction to previous experiences. The outsider may experience a diminishing sense of self worth and paradoxically, a sense of superiority at the same time. The emotional life of the outsider is frequently intense and can result in meaningful relationships being formed. This can be demonstrated by the texts: Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy, to kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Felon Heroes Documented by F. Crowley.
Maestro demonstrates this perfectly, particularly in the character of Paul. The arrival of Paul in Darwin’s society saw his outsider status being imposed on him. Paul was faced with discrimination and became a target for the mainstream group and because of this he decided to completely exclude himself from this group. “I soon learnt to avoid the bike shed and the school yard as much as possible. The designated music room…became my refuge.” This increased Paul’s arrogance and gave him a greater sense of superiority. He believed he was a more cultured student compared with the others. Conversely, when he was at piano lessons with Keller, Paul felt as is he was not up to Keller’s standard. “I wondered if he had set some lower level for me that would be sufficient.”  
After observing the scene in the library, Paul began to seek his fantasy. First he was intimate with Megan, but then realized she was unsatisfying and the relationship was seen to be superficial and lacking emotional significance. “She was too selfish, I realized later. Too used to being desired, to never having to involve herself in any real way.” After his moments of intimacy with Megan, Paul realizes that he is compelled to emotionally connect with Rosie. Paul gains much maturity from his short relationship with Megan, allowing him to have a deeply meaningful one with Rosie.
