Making the Most of Educational Technology in the Teacher’s Real World

Abstract
Technology trends suggest that the average classroom in our society today will be equipped with some type of educational technology. It has become a priority. Though technology may vary in sophistication, teachers can be confident that if they invest some effort and creativity, meaningful learning experiences that integrate technology will follow. Many teachers may actually be limited to a single computer in the classroom and occasional visits to a student computer lab, as is the case with my specific teaching assignment. Numerous opportunities exist to teach with technology effectively in just this situation. The steps to accomplish this include taking inventory of the exact technology, putting forth the necessary personal involvement, and exploring software application options to enhance learning.
Making the Most of Educational Technology in the Teacher’s Real World
      Part of the art of teaching in today’s average public school is the ability to make a delicious feast out of crumbs and leftovers. Specifically, assisting struggling, underprivileged, or unmotivated students to reach their potential and beyond in a 30 year-old classroom is difficult enough. In addition, equipping them with skills and knowledge for the age of technology with very aged technology presents a challenge. I, like many other teachers, find that you simply must make the most out of what you have to work with be it human or instructional resources. Technology is no different. Teachers are to take inventory of their individual worlds of technology and make the best possible use of all. It seems that much can be accomplished in a one-computer classroom like my own with limited access to a computer lab, if the vast technology options are explored and utilized.
