On March 28, 2009 I went to Manna on Main Street to serve dinner to those who might not have had the money or opportunity to have a fresh meal that night. I was not sure what to expect when pulling up to what looked like a small house on a busy road. My first impressions when walking in through the side door was “What have I just gotten myself into?†I saw all the signatures all over the walls. It didn’t look like there was much room for anymore writing or drawings for new volunteers. It continued throughout the entire building all the walls covered with thousands of names and different color Sharpie markers.
The first person I met there when I arrived was Dolly. She was a very kind woman who made us feel very welcome and was willing to help us with anything we needed. The girls and I were the first to arrive, since we didn’t need to cook anything we thought we would start just by making some lemonade, fruit punch and iced tea. After we prepared all the drinks and put them in their proper places we began to make the table setting.
We were waiting for the food to arrive, and starting to panic because it was so close to five o’clock and we were just waiting to see what would arrive first…the food….or the people? Just as soon as we hit panic mode the food finally came that we had been waiting for! The hoagies, the chips, ice cream everything was all there thankfully. We began to place the food out on each plate with the condiments set in the middle of the table so everyone could reach the things they needed. We then were told that we should have bought food for about 18 people. We did not have enough, so we had to run out again before they arrived and get another 3 ft hoagie. We started to put out the rest of the food that we had and had to find extra tables because we were not expecting the amount of people that had signed up for our night. As soon as five o’clock came around no one had shown up who signed up and Mike was just getting back...
