Context looks at the time and place a composer creates a text. When writing about the context of a certain time you have to take into account the Personal, Political, Social, Historical and Cultural conditions that influenced the author when creating his or her text. Mary Shelley grew up during a time of great social, political change which influenced her in the creation of Frankenstein. Her parents where also major influences on her creation of the novel.
Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, in London. Her Mother Mary Wollstonecraft was an author just as Shelley was and was a key feminist figure encouraging women to become more prominent figures in society. Shelley’s mother died giving birth to Shelley leaving her father to raise her. Her father William Godwin was a part of a group of a high esteemed radical thinkers group, exposing Shelley to new cutting-edge ideas. As a teenager Mary fell in love with Percy Bysshe Shelley they ran away together for a tour of France, Switzerland, and Germany, Mary leaving her family behind and Percy leaving his wife, this influencing Shelley as nature in Frankenstein sets the mood of the characters. In 1816 the Shelley’s went to Switzerland and settled on the Lake Geneva where she had visited the poet Lord Byron in Geneva. This was how she conceived the idea for Frankenstein. After Percy’s wife died Mary and he got married weeks later, Percy was also an author and edited Mary's manuscript for Frankenstein.
