MSOFFICE assignment #1 -   Each problem or part of problem worth 4 points.

Show your work.   Answers without adequate work shown as needed will lose points.

1)   The amount of metal S (in square inches) that it takes to make a can for tomato soup depends         on the   radius (R) and the height (h), using this equation:

  a) Rewrite this formula by factoring out the greatest common factor on the right-hand
side:

S=2Ï€r2+2Ï€rh
              S=2Ï€r (r+h)

b) If H = 5 inches, write the formula that expresses S in terms of R. Leave pi as a variable, do not convert it to a value.

S=2Ï€r (r+5)

2)   The area in square feet for a rectangular deck is given by A = x2 + 6x +8

  a) What would be the area if x was 6?

x=6, then A=x^2 + 6x +8
A=6^2 +6*6+8
A=36+36+8
A= 80
  b) Factor the above equation. Remember that Area = Length * Width,   If the width of
the deck is x + 2, what is the length? (do not solve using values, just find what the term for the length would be, in terms of x)

A=x^2 +6x+8
A=(x+2)(x+4)
A= W*L
x+2 = width
L=x+4

3) In a study of worker efficiency at Wong Laboratories it was found that the number of components assembled per hour by the average worker t hours after starting work could be modeled by the formula:

                      N =   -3t3 + 23t2 + 8t

            a) Re-write the formula by factoring the right-hand side completely

N(t)= -3t^3 + 23t^2 + 8t
Nt= -t3t2- 23t - 8
N(t)= (-t)(3t+1)(t-8)

  b) Use the factored version of the formula to find the number of components assembled by a worker 3 hours after they started work.

N(t)= (-t)(3t+1)(t-8)
N(3)= (-3)(3(3)+1)(3-8)
N3= -39+1-5
N3= -310-5
N(3)= (15)(10)
N(3)= 150
4)   The distance from the earth to the sun is 93 million miles..

                            a )   express this distance in scientific...
