Running head: STRATEGIC PLAN PAPER

Strategic Plan:   Verizon Communications Retail Markets
University of Phoenix
May 25, 2009

Executive Summary
Verizon Communications has embarked on a bold mission to bring fiber optics technology to every home and business in America in the new century.   This new fiber optic service, called FiOS, is the new brand name and future of the corporation.   The CEO of Verizon Communications, Ivan Seidenberg, so strongly believes and stands behind this fiber optic initiative so much, he has successfully convinced all major shareholders.   Ivan, firmly believes this plan, while ostensibly long and risky, will in fact, become the key differentiator in the telecommunications and entertainment industry, putting making Verizon Communications the top provider of telephone, Internet, and entertainment services.
Verizon Communications roots began from the original Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) days.   The staple product for Verizon has been phone lines and enhanced features for consumers to use equipment and service.   With governmental changes in the industry allowing outside industries to penetrate the telecom market, Verizon learned that offering just telecommunication services would not be enough to stay alive and quickly shifted gears to begin offering a service no one could have predicted 20 years ago, television.
This paper will analyze Verizon Communications Retail Market division from various areas to comprehend fully, the environmental factors, competitive landscape, internal and external stakeholders, and the critical factors Verizon needs for success.   The internal and external factors will be analyzed with an emphasis placed on the core mission, values, and six key imperatives.   Additionally, these factors will be scrutinized on how they create the foundation for long-term goals needed for the survival of a corporation more than 100 years old.
