Well we got a many methods of measuring crime but three of the most common are:
• UCR
• NIBRS
• NCVS
The UCR (Uniform Crime Reports) began in the 1930’s as a FBI crime report. Basically most of the police precincts in the USA were to send in data about certain types of crime that have been reported to them. The FBI puts all the crime in to two groups: Part I – Violent Crimes – Homicide, forcible rape, robbery etc. and Property crime – G.T.A., burglary, arson etc. One of the big problems with the UCR is the fact that not all the police precincts commit to it and also every crime could be dealt as a different charge.
The NIBRS (National Incident-Based Reporting System) which will hopefully replace the UCR is basically the same thing just a little more “in depth”, more extensive information that will be more of use to the FBI.
NCVS (National Crime Victimization Survey) was born in the 1970”s under the US Department of Justice. The NCVS got down and dirty when it came to collecting information about crime. They would actually go as far as the time and place, gender, even income and relationship with the offenders. They actually have helped the statistics greatly with their information basically because in was more real then just a phone call to the police which could be fake.
One way or the other all of them help us understand even though it could be fake but we could at least get an idea on crime throughout the country and more of a better understanding on how to maybe deal with it.
