Media Censorship
Today’s society is drenched in new technology allowing more and more aspects of media to be available at our fingertips. Apple, Verizon, and Direct TV are just some of the big companies that are enabling our society to use these luxuries. Media is everywhere - in our homes and offices with televisions and computers, as well as in our hands with devices like the iPhone or the Blackberry. Since Media is transmitted through technology at a rate that grows exponentially every day, media censorship is an increasing concern for society. Reading “Desensitized Society Drenched in Sleaze†by Jeff Jacoby in our Elements of Argument text inspired me to look more closely at the link between the continued growth of media through technology and the problems in our society. In “Desensitized Society Drenched in Sleazeâ€, Jacoby spoke primarily on one spectrum of media, movies. He reflected on the drastic differences between movies and life when he grew up in the 1970’s and movies and life in the mid-1990’s when he wrote the article.
Immediately, I began to reflect on the more drastic changes that have occurred in society from the mid-1990 to today. Media continues to transcend through the years and plays an increasingly significant role, examples of which are often times violent, vulgar, and very explicit, and it is my hope that we as a society find a remedy for our desensitized state when dealing with media. Censorship is an ugly word to many, but due to the increasing amount of vulgarities displayed through the media, censorship is necessary to protect our children through both movies and television. The opposition will argue that censorship deprives people of their basic right to information, however they are wrong because societal censorship of information that protects our youth can be accessed other ways if necessary.
