Media & Society – Thinking Critically About The Media

1) How would you tell the story of the development of the Information Society to your parents?

I would tell my parents that Information Society produces information that are primary economic   and social activities. I would also tell them that there is an increasing amount of time spent with communication media and using technologies such as the telephone and computer.

2) Describe what convergence has meant in your life and how it affects you.
Convergence in my life has meant getting in contact easier with my family and friends through my cell phone and my computer. By using text messaging on my cell phone it was quicker for me to socialize with my family and friends that I don’t see often. By using the internet (facebook) on my computer it also made it easier to socialize with my family and friends.

3) What will your future life in the Information Society be like?
My future life in the Information Society   will be different.   Mass media sources are becoming more numerous and also less authoritative and professional. Messages   are going to be smaller specialized audience segments. Audiences are going to become smaller and less anonymous.

4) Explain text messaging using the SMCR model.
SMCR Model has the most communication situations and feedback is also provided between receiver and the source. A simple model in which a corporate or individual source encodes a message and transmits it through a physical channel to the person for who the message is intended – the receiver.

5) If you send a text message to your entire “friends circle” is that mass communication? Explain.
No. Sending a mass text message is small group communication. When you text your friends the feedback is as soon as possible. Mass communication involves no immediate feedback
