The Messiah
The concepts of the Messiah are quite similar between the Jews and Christian but there are some differences in their beliefs. Indeed some religions are born out of others and thus share cultural traditions and theologies. Christianity, being born out of Judaism takes many beliefs and incorporates it in their concepts. Although religions do share the same traditions, the interpretation of the concept may vary from one religion to the other. Within Judaism Christian theology there is no single issue more divisive than the concept of the Messiah. Whereas the Jews believe that the Messiah is an earthly king who is the saviour of Judaism and is going to reestablish Jerusalem restoring the Temple. The Christians believe that the Messiah is the divine son of God on earth sent to redeem mankind of their sins. The following will examine: the, the Messiah according to Judaism, Christian concept of the Messiah, Jesus in relation to both religions.
The Messiah according to Judaism believes that he will be a great political leader descended from the line of King David. He will be a influential leader, and others will be inspired by him and follow his example1. He is going to win many military battles for Israel and make creditable decisions as an honourable judge2. Most importantly is that the Messiah will be a human being, not a god, demi-god, or other supernatural being. If the proclaimed to be Messiah dies before he completes the missions, than that person cannot be the Messiah. The missions of the Messiah are to revitalize Jerusalem and create a world government in Israel for Jews and gentiles. The Temple will be rebuilt and the religious court system of Jewish law of the land well be established3.
Christians on the other hand give a new meaning to the term “messiah†to them the Messiah is a Savior of the Holy Trinity who suffers and dies for saving sinful man from eternal punishment in hell. The man will be a descendant from the line of David,...
