Methodology Description, key features, and associated tools
The methodology that will be used for the card reader upgrade project is Waterfall with Lean. The Waterfall Methodology is a traditional development methodology (Reed, 2009, p. 1). The term Waterfall comes from structure of the Waterfall Methodology where one phase must be completed before another phase of the project can begin (Reed, 2009, p. 1). The Waterfall Methodology is highly inflexible as phases must be complete before the following phase can begin and if modifications need to be made to previous phases they cannot be made. This project also uses Lean methodology in combination with the Waterfall Methodology. The Lean methodology focuses on delivery of individual features of the project instead of delivery of the entire product at the end of the project (Reed, 2009, p. 1). When using Lean Development Methodology, an individual feature is planned, tested, and released before the next feature is worked on (Reed, 2009, p. 1).
The expectations of the Waterfall with Lean Methodology is that the replacement of the existing Security Access Control System, integration with PeopleSoftHR, and the upgrade/replacement of existing card readers will be completed separately with each feature completed before the end of the project. Each feature of the access card reader upgrade project will be completed before the next feature in the project is completed. There are many deliverables from the Waterfall with Lean Methodology:
1. Cost-Benefit Analysis
2. Feasibility Study
3. Risk Management Plan
4. Functional Requirements Document
5. Test Plan
6. Conversion Plan
7. System Design Document
8. Implementation Plan
9. Maintenance Manual
10. Training Plan
11. User Manual
12. Contingency Plan
The steps used within the Waterfall with Lean methodology are clearly laid out...
