“How does Michael Bay” use presentational devices to create tension and atmosphere in the first two opening scenes of “The Rock”?

Introduction:
“The Rock” is a 15 rated action thriller directed by “Michael Bay”. If your looking for a film that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the film for that job.
As I will be explaining this film builds up heaps of tension something needed as it is an action thriller, the purpose of this genre is to intrigue the audience and this film does just that as I will demonstrate by pointing out a few examples of presentational devices “Michael Bay” incorporated into this film.

Scene 1 analysis
Sound 1:
In the first scene when “General Lawrence X Hummel” is smoking in a rather depressed state, in the background you can hear radio static and muffled transmissions, with men faintly shouting and calling for help, gun shots and bombs dropping, this suggests that “General Hummel” is reminiscing the past failed mission or this is something that’s happened to him and he feels depressed about it, the aura this emits is quit saddening as you see him depressed and disappointed.

Sound 2
My second choice is also in the first scene, it is the army burial scene, the sound in this scene spoke to me, when the flag passes over the camera in the background you can hear; snare drums, trumpet usually used in the army to show dignity and respect for the fallen this leaves you a bit stranded as your wondering who died? Who is this burial for? Does he/she have any relevance in the film? It sort of builds up a little tension then when the clip with the wall of fire, the music suddenly intensifies and is louder to perhaps emphasize the seriousness of the dilemma. That’s what I picked up for the sounds.
