1. Introduce Modernism
Modernism is a set of ideals, practises and believes that began in the early part of the twentyif century, it inspired art, design, architecture and psychology.
Many modernists had suffered through tough times like the two wars and the great depression. The modernists wanted to recreate the world from scratch a rebirth of practises and beliefs, they questioned alot about society and wanted to achieve a pure world. It is said that the Nazi's helped destroy modernism but in a way the Nazi's wanted much a similar thing to the modernists, a new pure health conciousness world free from disease. During the wars many of the buildings in Germany were destroyed, this opened a new wave for architects. They could recreate they own cities with this new pure philosophy, many modernist architects flourished.
Architecture was seen more for its symbolism than is function, modernist architecture wasn't just a design of a building but a packing of a lifestyle along with beliefs.They wanted to achieve the items function aswell as keeping the design simple. Rationalism was a big part of modernism, it was seen that embelisments were seen as bad design and that it should be designed to with each part to serve a purpose. Architecture really seen this ideal, each part of a modernist house would be designed to a function for the lifestyle of inhabitants.
Modernist art tries to be objective, it tries to shows things for how they are. Many modernist artists used cubism, created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque cubism it was inspired by the simple designs of foreign cultures. Ernst Gombrich described cubism as "the most radical attempt to stamp out ambiguity and to enforce one reading of the picture - that of a man-made construction, a coloured canvas.".Kandinky said that certain colours have affinity to certain forums.
